Su Nuraxi
That the nuragic palace of Barumini, known as Su Nuraxi (the nuraghe), is one of the megalithic buildings of the ancient Sardinian civilization more known than ever, is all too obvious. Buried for millennia and brought to light from 1950 to 1957, revealing all its magnificence, is a complex consisting of a central tower originally over 18 meters high, as a building of 6 floors, protected by four other towers, fused together by a majestic wall. Over the centuries it added a new fortification more external and an imposing village, a total of about 8,000 square meters, with 350 meters perimeter.
Its grandeur can be easily understood when compared to the famous site of Stonehenge, whose surface enclosed in the circle of the menhirs is about 750 square meters with a circumference of just 115 meters. Scholars believe that Su Nuraxi was founded about 4,000 years ago, although there are those who argue that, along with a good part of the other 8,000 nuraghi scattered throughout Sardinia, it is actually backdated by a few millennia.
